The Martian Chronicles / The Illustrated Man / The Golden Apples of the Sun Ray Bradbury 9781435129061 Books Reviews
Wonderful book, heavy, attractive, nice pages and good read.
Didn't care for it, myself, but bought it for someone else who loved it. Package is fine, however - an elegant display that I don't think is worth the work but, hey, I do understand why Bradbury is a legend (I had some gold editions of Hugo, de Maupassant, and Shakespeare; those are names worth the glitter.)
I've owned various paperback and hardback editions of these three novels since the '70s, and have read them many times. I was attracted to this edition because of the stunning binding and cover art.
However, in reading, I found that the text has been updated The original chapter subtitles for the stories ran from January 1999 until October 2026. Someone must have reasoned "Hey, 1999 is already history, we need to change these dates...." So they did, moving all dates forward 31 years, so now the chapters cover they time from January 2030 until October 2057.
I felt this change is not justified. We've had numerous devices land on Mars and send back data already, we know it isn't the same Mars as described by Ray Bradbury. His Mars is an alternate Mars. In 2030 we still aren't going to find Mars as he described it. Seeing these changes was the first thing about this edition that I didn't like.
Reading the text, I found it too had been updated. In the story "The Earth Men", the crew of the third expedition to Mars lands in what appears to be a lovely small town from the American midwest. The original story has the crew hearing a phonograph playing a song called "Roamin' in the Gloamin'" by Harry Lauder. The textual adjustment has changed this to "April Showers" by Al Jolson. Again, the change adds nothing to the story.
As bad, or worse are the frequent typographical errors. With a higher frequency than almost any other book I own, I noticed words misspelled and other strange errors. I've read "The Martian Chronicles" many times in the past 40, so I know fairly well what it is supposed to say. When I come upon a word which was spelled correctly in my older editions, and is misspelled in this one, it is jarring. All of this was strangely at odds with the high quality binding and paper. A beautiful book to look at and to hold, but disappointing in many ways.
I also own the Barnes and Noble leatherbound classics edition of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Edgar Allen Poe. It too has many, many typographical errors. I can only surmise that proofreading is a vanishing art.
I'm used to reading paperbacks; this is nice.
I was planning on buying Martin Chronicles and Illustrated Man; buying this edition was a no-brainer.
Definitely worth the buy. The book is extremely well made, and these three novels are some of the best.
I read this as a teen and loved it and now an adult I am happy to own this .
I love Ray Bradbury's stories. This book has added a great look to my collection. The cover art is very well done and looks great.
